Hi, Im Doug Patt and this is How to design like an architect. I thought the best way to talk about design would be to create a dream home for someone, but first, lets talk about the design process. An architect, like any design professional draws on a wellspring of information. How we design is based to some extent on what we know. What we know can be based on the school we went to, the books weve read, the magazines we like to look at, where we grew up, our friends and relatives, the occupations weve held and in general, our life experiences. A professor named Edmund Bacon (actually the father of the actor Kevin Bacon) told me something once that I will never forget. He said, Its in the doing that the idea comes. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch. Sketching is one of the best ways to work out the solution to a problem. And I believe that its exactly what Edmund Bacon meant when he said its in the doing that the idea comes. Before we design our dream home I need to give you a little insight into one of my favorite architects. Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 August 27, 1965) was a Swiss born architect, writer and painter among other things. He was well known as a modern architect and for his theories & approach to architecture ...

I think anyone can call themselves an architect, but it’s the uniform style that makes a true architect stand out.

@Meklorka Why are you looking for a way to be offended? This is the problem with most people. He is just trying to share his knowledge with people, and you (as well as others) find a way to be offended. I doubt it was his intent. Why not just take away the bit of knowledge he is trying to pass on. This is great for someone who just wants a basic overview. Just get over yourself, you are not a messiah for people being wronged. You are just a trouble maker. You are a troll.

Doug, I am currently a 14 year old Freshman, I’ve been seeking what job I think would be best for me as a future career, and I’ve been greatly influenced by you to become an Architect. I would like to thank you for your very wide decision of architectural tutorial videos, as they are very helpful to beginners, such as myself, and even the experts could grab a few tips from these. (: I’m very glad you’ve decided to make these videos, please, keep it up!
Kind regards,
-Corey

@jhgewalt Thank you. It is highly presumptuous. I made the video to simply de-mystify things a bit. It’s incredibly condensed, very much dumbed down and not representative of the hard work an architect does. With that said, I need to make things simple in order to understand them. I did the video for that reason. Thanks for the note:) Kind Regards, Doug

I stumbled across your video and thought it highly presumptuous that anyone would attempt “How to design like an architect” in 5:20. But you did it by cutting out all the “fat” leaving the bones and skeletal essence intact. I don’t care if it’s Corbu or Wright or tipis or earthquakes (Eisenman) who inspired your design, the point you made was “process”. The danger in architecture today is that it too often slavishly follows those who did not “dig” deep enough into their souls to do their best.

One of the things that seduces my eyes when i’m watching your videos is the way you sketch, you are a very talented architect!!
Congrats!!

Wjat’s wrong with the tipi everyone? It’s just a kind of building! very smart and… cute!

Le Corbusier’s idea of the “compact city” was where most of the social problems in places like London came from where the large social housing complexes created dens of social disorder. Corbusier concentrates too much on the positive space of buildings but not on creating positive space in the spaces left behind. The result leads to people ignoring his areas of recreation between buildins that were supposed to prevent these social problems.

aghhhh building is very ugly… at least for me, but those are all great tutorials
Aralık 5th, 2010 on 05:23
@Meklorka-He cited due dilligence while working with his client by way of interview, as stated in the video, and as proper course of action for an architect. He didn’t say, “the traditional home of all American Indians…the tipi”, but rather he stated, “the traditional American Indian tipi”. That is not a general statement, but instead a direct fact. By way of assumint Mr. Patt did not interview his client properly, you’ve made an unfair attack on him. And in all, he was very polite about it.
